what are the articles in grammar
what are the articles in grammar ?
THE A and AN are Articles in grammar, and they preceded by nouns
there are two kinds of articles one is known as indefinite Article, and 2nd one is definite articles
below I had discussed both what the articles in grammar are
1 Indefinite article (what are the articles in grammar)
A or AN is the indefinite articles because they do not mention the person or thing spoken of as;
A Pilot; that is any pilot, any doctor,
Definite Article (what are the articles in grammar)
THE is known as a definite Article because it points out some particular person or thing: as
He saw the pilot; meaning some individual pilot
The indefinite Article use (
Article is generally used before a singular countable noun.
A pen and apple a boy
Choice of indefinite Article (A or AN)
The choice between A and An is denoted by the sound. the word which has the beginning sound of vowel uses AN
For example (what are the articles in grammar))
An apple an enemy as ass an orange an hour an heir, an umbrella, an inkstand,
You can notice that the words ass enemy hour honest orange begin with a vowel sound as the
initial consonant is not pronounced
Words with the beginning sound consonant A is used; as
A hole. a reindeer, a boy ,a woman a horse a yard a European a union a unicorn
Please take notice that the above words are started with a consonant sound like union university etc. begin with the consonant sound that y you same like we say
Such a note, a one rupee note one-eyed man
Because word one begins with a consonant sound
Use of the Definite Article (what are the articles in grammar)
Definite Article is used to talk about a particular person or thing or one already mentioning.
For example
The mobile you want is out in the market ( which mobile ? the one you want )
Let’s go the waterpark ( = the waterpark in the town)
The boy cried ( the boy = the boy already talked about )
When a singular noun is used to appear for a whole class
The cow is a holy animal
Or we can say cows are the sacred animal
The dog loves chicken
The cat loves milk
Before the names of books
The holy Quran The Bible
Before terms of things unique of their type
The sky, the sun, the earth, the sea
Before a proper noun when it is followed by an adjective or a defining adjectival clause; as
The great king
Mr Andrew, whom you met last night, is my uncle
With superlative; as
The tallest men have a camera
This is the best mobile Nokia
With ordinals; as
Andrew was the first man to arrive
The tenth chapter of the book is exciting
Before musical instrument: as
He can play the piano
Omission of the Article
The articles are omitted before the name of items and when uncountable nouns in a general sense; as
Sugar is bad for his teeth
Silver is a precious metal
OMMISSION OF ARTICLE (what are the articles in grammar)
The Article is omitted when plural countable nouns are used in a general way; as
Children like ice cream
Internet is used in many offices
Before languages; as
We are studying Arabic
They speak Sindhi at home
Articles are omitted before college, school, university, bed, church, prison hospital when these are visited or used for their primary purpose.
I learnt Arabic at home.
He goes to church on Saturdays
He stays in bed till eight every morning
Articles are omitted before the names of the relations like mother, father, uncle aunty.
Brother has returned
Uncle wants you to see him
REPETITION OF THE ARTICLE (what are the articles in grammar)
when two or more adjectives come before the same noun, Article is used before the first adjective only. Still, when they qualify different nouns, the Article is usually used before each adjective.
If we can say
I have a black and white cat.
I mean a cat that is partly black and partly white.
But if we say
I have a black and the white cat. I mean two cats, one black and the other white.
Compare the following two sentences:
1. The headmaster and Teacher is absent
2. The headmaster and the Teacher are absent.
The first sentence indicates that the posts of headmaster and Teacher are held
by one person.
The repetition of the Article in the second sentence is due to the two posts being held by two different persons.
So you can see that when two or more connected nouns refer to the same person or thing, the Article is only used before the first. Still, when two or more connected nouns denote different persons or something, the Article is used before both.
Also, see the following sentences:
Sir Amjad was a great orator and statesman.
There are great economists and great lawyers in the groups, among others.
We can also say
The second and the third chapter.
[Or] The second and third chapters
whenever expressing a comparison, if two nouns refer to the same person or thing, the
the Article can be used before the first noun only; as,
He is a better teacher than an administrator.
He is a better actor than a director.
He is a better blogger than a freelancer.
He would make a better teacher than a lawyer.
But if they mention different persons or things, the Article must be used with each noun;
He is a better teacher than the lawyer (would make). He would make a better statesman than a philosopher (would make).
You can notice that the words ass enemy hour honest orange begin with a vowel sound as the initial consonant is not pronounced.
Words with the beginning sound consonant A is used; as
A hole a reindeer a boy a woman a horse a yard a European a union a unicorn
Take notice that the above words are started with a consonant sound like union university etc. begin with the consonant sound
Hope you understand all my basic to advance points about
